CONTROVERSY có nghĩa là một cuộc thảo luận hay tranh luận công cộng về một điều gì mà có rất nhiều ý kiến trái chiều, hoặc khiến nhiều người bất bình, TRANH CÃI. Tính từ của CONTROVERSY là CONTROVERSIAL. Những giới từ như OVER hay ABOUT có thể dùng sau CONTROVERSY để chỉ đối tượng của sự tranh cãi. Ngoài CONTROVERSIAL ta còn có thể dùng tính từ CONTENTIOUS để chỉ một điều gì đó dễ gây tranh cãi, bất đồng.

The six-month interim nuclear agreement between the West and Iran has created controversy. It includes Iran's agreement to freeze its nuclear program and allow daily inspections of key facilities for six months. In return, the U.S and allies will ease some economic sanctions, about seven billion dollars' worth. While some hail the deal as significant achievement Israel is calling it "a historic mistake." And many in the U.S. Congress are skeptical as well. U.S. President Barack Obama defends his administration's approach to Iran, insisting that "tough talk" alone will not guarantee US security.

Controversy is brewing in the East China Sea. The United States pledged support for ally Japan in a growing dispute with China over Senkaku/Diaoyu islands. The U.S. military has flown two unarmed B-52 bombers near disputed islands in the East China Sea, defying an attempt by China to wrest control of the territory from Japan. China's defense ministry says it monitored the flight and warned it "is capable of exercising effective control" over the area.

Finally, short lived controversy in Moscow. A giant Louis Vuitton trunk has been assembled in Moscow's Red Square ahead of the opening of an exhibition dedicated to the famous fashion brand. But french luxury brand has been ordered to remove a giant trunk after it triggered outrage among some Russians.
